2008 Volunteer Work Trip
to Mississippi to rebuild after Katrina

Our trip started on Sunday, April 13, 2008. Those that were flying met at 7:00 at Muddy Creek Lutheran Church to pick up the buses to go to the Philadelphia Airport. This was earlier than we talked about at our last meeting but it was necessary in order for our bus driver to meet his obligations for that day.

We got together for the required group photo. We also formed a circle for prayers before we started on the trip. A lot of people had made this same trip before in the fall of 2007, but they drove down in vans that time. We determined that it was less expensive to fly than to take vans when you took into consideration the other expenses such as motel rooms and food.

We were going to fly on Air Tran Airways. Our flight from Philadelphia was at 11:57 a.m. We were scheduled to arrive in Atlanta at 2:07 p.m. Our flight out of Atlanta was scheduled to depart at 4:28 p.m. We were scheduled to arrive in Gulfport at 4:51 p.m. (Mississippi time is an hour earlier than Pennsylvania time.)

We arrived in Gulfport late due to some flight delays and then we had some problems with the rental vans so we were well over an hour late when we arrived Camp Biloxi. They did hold dinner for us so we did not have to look for some place to eat that night. After dinner we had an orientation meeting where they explained the rules of the camp and what we could expect for the next week. After the orientation meeting we went to find our rooms.
